material won't go away

i had two objects, one had no material, the other had an orange material.
i eventually combined the two objects, and set the new object to have no material. i had saved, closed down, and came back to work on it when i realized that the orange part is still orange. it says that no material is assigned, but the material appears in the list. is there a way to delete it from the list so the one object won’t be orange? or at least some way to delete the material off of the object?

Did you try the edit buttons? Press F5 and take a look at the link and materials tab. there you can see which materials are linked to the object. Blender works with a quite unintuitive material index system that has buttons all over the place. Anyway, find your material with the ‘0 Mat 0’ button and press ‘Delete’.

there doesn’t seem to be anything i can do in the shading (F5).
you’ll notice that the entire thing is one object, and the material
assigned is a default one. the neon orange material is still showing up
even though it is not assigned to anything. you will also notice that the
active materials says “2 Mat 1” and if i change that 1 to 2 then the orange
material is assigned, but it won’t let me change the 2.

i’ve tried seperating the bottom orange from the top gray back into
two seperate objects and then deleting the material off of the orange, but
it isn’t working either.

The MA: field shows the active material. Just click the arrow to the left (or right) of 2 MAT 1 to make it 1 MAT 1 (or 2 MAT 2) (and your MA: field will show “neon orange.003”) and hit the X to delete it.
