First real delve into modeling here, so I started with something simple. Thoughts? I know it’s not great, but I’d like to know what specifically I can improve on.
It could use some materials and lighting
Materials and lighting are two things I’m still terrible at.
Try adding a subsurf modifier (Ctrl+# or Modifiers->Subdivision Surface) it’ll look a lot smoother.
Besides that & what Modron said, I like it
YouTube 3 point lighting. Very good thing to know. Materials are a little simpler to do in cycles and I have an easier time with them. I myself still have issues with lighting and texturing too. if you extrude those loop cuts, the ones you have definning the black line, in and exclude the up and down axis. You will create depth there and will help with the realism.
