Stratocaster Reconstruction in Blender

Hi everyone — I’m Shane. I wanted to share a project that became my introduction to Blender and eventually turned into a full mechanical and electrical reconstruction of a Stratocaster.

When I started this, I barely knew the software. I watched a few tutorials just to get oriented, but as the project grew, I relied on them less and less. The guitar itself became the teacher. Every contour, cavity, and component pushed me to learn the next tool or workflow.

Project Stats

This ended up being a much deeper build than I expected:

  • 355 objects
  • 3,524,521 vertices
  • 7,828,364 edges
  • 4,301,321 faces
  • 8,668,328 triangles

These numbers come from modeling every part as its own component — not just the visible surfaces, but the internal structure as well.

What’s Included

I approached this like a teardown in reverse:

  • Full internal cavity geometry
  • Pickup coil structure
  • Switch wafers and wiring harness
  • Worm gears and tuner internals
  • Screw threads, ferrules, plates, and hardware
  • Accurate body contours and neck profile
  • Realistic assembly order and part relationships

If it exists on the real instrument, I tried to model it.

Why I Built It

This project taught me Blender from the inside out. It also taught me the Strat’s anatomy in a way I never expected. I wanted to understand how everything fit together, and the only way was to build it piece by piece.

Customization

Because everything is its own object, the model is fully customizable:

  • Neck woods
  • Inlays
  • Pickguard materials
  • Body finishes
  • Hardware variations

It behaves like a real instrument — swap a part, and the rest still fits.

I’m posting this because I think others might find it useful, interesting, or just fun to explore. Everything here is original work, modeled from scratch. I’m happy to answer questions or share more breakdowns if anyone’s curious.

That sounds like a fantastic project. one of my first major projects was making a m1911a1 handgun. I found a full set blueprints and modeled each individual component to exact detail. Understanding how everything works together truly does build up quite the appreciation for the complexity of the machine, whether gun or guitar.

wow, that is an insane level of detail - have you approached Fender - i can definitely see this as a glTF on their website with an exploded view slider :wink:

Can confirm, my 1911 project back in the day got the attention of Colt firearms and I definitely got some contract work from them out of that.

For me, there are so many reasons to like this project.

I’m a guitar player (former touring musician) and my favorite guitar is a Strat. And, Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite player. And then, there’s Blender, which is its own reason to cheer.

I watched a video of Prince the other day playing an orange Strat. And here it is, in your images. Well done, Shane. Oh, and those windings. :slight_smile: Awesome.
