Not calling dibs, just letting you guys know that I’m working on Suzanne with gears in her head – title is a toss up between “Suzanne’s Brain” and “Suzanne: Gearhead”.

Hello everyone

I’m very excited every week to watch all the new arts.
But now I have a little question and hope you can answer…
When you accept the challenge and start to work, do you use tutorials (YouTube Videos for example) for inspiration and use elements from this for your own work? Or do you all this art by your own (“pure”)? Means no picking from a tutorial or something else…
I’m looking forward to hear (or read) how you do all of this amazing arts

Hope you understand what I try to say :see_no_evil: my english is “not the yellow from the egg” …

Hello!
I’m sure I use some knowledge obtained from past tutorials that I’ve watched in my work but I generally don’t watch a tutorial that shows how to create an element of my scene during the week. If I’m watching a tutorial for help during the weekend challenge it’s usually for finding where a button went in 2.8.

If a considerable portion of the scene is created with the knowledge from a tutorial I’d be safe and mark it open. Pure just generally means that the work was completed by you.

I think whoever learned Blender without tutorials can throw the first stone. :stuck_out_tongue:

I used to watch some tutorials while making my entries whenever I got stuck and had no idea how to achieve some effect in Blender. However, simply tagging along a tutorial and punching all the numbers that the tutorial uses feels quite cheap. You should try to mix the tricks from the tutorials with the ones you already know.

As Gary Panter once said: “If you have one person you’re influenced by, everyone will say you’re the next whoever. But if you rip off a hundred people, everyone will say you’re original”.

Hello @MissSunnyWeather
Im sure its different for all people and as you will see (or have seen) there are some of us just learning blender (and 3d modeling and art in general) and others who’ve been around for a while. For myself, i use these weekend challenges for personal challenges; a goal is set, a time limit is set and away i go. If i use an add-on or a bunch or textures from the internet, i tag mine as Open (if i was to use assets not created by me or re-used assets from another project, i would also tag it as Open and note what i did (have not crossed that bridge yet)). For each challenge i normally try and use a different part/option in blender with-in my project and that normal requires me to look how to use that option, weather its from the Blender Doc’s or a YouTube video, which i would not tag as Open because i do not follow that youtube video step by step i just use a technique form it and modify it for my needs. There have been times when i post my entry and used a tuts for help, i also posted a link to the video.

If it was me, dont get hung up with the whole Open / Pure thing, dont take credit for other peoples work and just start making stuff, this is for fun, learning, entertainment
Hope to see your work soon!

Hey! Thanks for your answer

I love creativ arts that challenge my mind. I like to watch what poeple do with just a word. So many different ideas every week and there are often works with messages or jokes in it. I love this.

So I thought about how you do that. Just for interest. I don’t want to start to blender. I just want to watch, think about it and than say something like “oooh :astonished:
Hope I didn’t Interrupt the contest with my little question too hard

It’s old but it works

Open entry as I used textures from cc0textures.com and the extra objects addon for the gears. The rust material is entirely procedural though.

Rendered in cycles with 256 samples. Managed to get this done in a day. It’s not quite what I envisioned but I’d spend too long trying to change that so here we go :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi! Nice to have you around.
One of the nice things about this challenge is that it isn’t a ‘normal contest’. The competition-aspect just isn’t that important. This is all about having fun and learning a few things along the way. And tutorials are a great way to learn something new. If that new knowledge can be used to create something new, that is even better.
Apart from the pure/open category, it is always nice to mention tools, tutorials, resources, … that were used. This way, someone else might be able to learn something new, too. For me, that is pretty close to das Gelbe vom Ei.

This is how I usually approach my entries:
1.) I wait for the rest of the family to go to bed. (usually between 12PM and 01AM, Sunday morning)
2.) I think about the theme and wait for the first idea that comes to my mind.
3.) If possible, I try to avoid that idea by all means. This usually leads to another idea.
4.) After that, I cut the idea down to something which can be done in 3-4 hours.
5.) As this usually doesn’t work, I cut it down even more while creating the image.
6.) Between 04 and 05AM I usually call it a day… night… you know what I mean.
