2.5 copy/append/link(?) mesh

I’m a total n00b having trouble with a simple task:
I’m trying to copy some mesh from one .blend file to another (in a fully editable form).

In 2.49 I used to be able to do this by using append/link but in 2.5 it no longer allows me to edit the linked mesh. Even after I select a linked object and hit ‘L’ to make the object “local”, I can’t enter edit mode.

Please help me!

Objects that are linked in could never be edited, not even in 2.49. If you wish to edit a linked object press L and choose Object+ (object) data. The object data would be the mesh data.

Or simply Append the object instead of Link

Oh so that’s the difference between Append and Link.
