2.5 how to change color of object--frustrated at this point

2.5 learning curve is beginning to stay flat and am not making any progress at this point

up against the all on this–anyone know a tutorial that shows how to change the color of an object?==i want to have 3 balls red,blue and green --i have played around with properties of object, youtube etc to no avail–i know i am missing something very simple–i create a material for each of them, played with textures etc to no availalso played with object in edit mode–vector paint does not help as it does not seem to change anything on the rendred image

You have to go into the material panel (should be a small sphere icon i think), there you have all your basic material settings. The diffuse color changes the overall color of your object.
