2.5D Cartoon Models

http://www.alecrivers.com/2.5dcartoonmodels/

We take vector art drawings of a cartoon from different views (a) and use them to automatically generate a 2.5D cartoon (b), which associates each stroke with a 3D position. The 2.5D cartoon can then be used to simulate a rotation in 3D and generate a rendering of the cartoon in a novel view ©.

this made my brain hurt until i saw the process of creation

Impressive !!
Could be usefull for Synfig !

Yeah, it’s impressive.

i’ll go ahead and add the mandatory LETS GET THIS IN BLENDER comment, although there are obviously more important things.

I have no idea how this could be added to blender…

Yeah, seems more fitting to something like Flash or Inkscape.

well, i WAS just joking because it seems like every other technical paper posted gets added in blender super fast, ridiculously.

but now that i’m thinking of it… i think it fits as a module of blender more than flash, problem being we don’t have a vector drawing module, although we have similar things

blender already has a more robust 3d and camera system than flash or anything would. It can also manipulate curves well.

it also fits being able to put 2d stuff into 3d environments well. or even keeping 2d environment but in the 3d world. i mean i hear south park is made in maya, i can imagine poeple wanting to do a similar but different thing would get great use out of something like this where they have more control over the appearance of shapes from different angles.

if somehow it were ever dropped in blender it would have to be a whole new nodule like the sequencer or 3d view, etc. it would allow the curve drawing from different views.

i think a couple years down the road it’s completely fitting, but for 2.5 or even 2.6 i find it distracting from other stuff unless some code is really interested in it and wouldn’t have worked on anything else anyways

not hard to set up if you’re familiar with contraints and drivers! click for video example (i only made shape keys for z axis rotation)

pardon my crappy model, too
