I have been working with older versions and now updated to 2.78a. In older versions everything works.
However, in 2.78a, even default cube does not appear. If I hit tab, I can see it. I can even render it. But in default view it is either invisible or stretches to infinity as a yellow line.
Is this some simple setting problem? Or should I stay with older Blender?

There is no setting to ‘hide default cube’. It’s up to you to decide which version you use. Seeing as no-one else apparently has this issue it’s most likely something with your computer settings
Reset to factory settings
Update graphics card drivers (se don’t know anything about your computer specs etc!)
Try the latest versions from https://builder.blender.org/download/
It doesn’t matter, if it’s default cube or full model; if I load up old model, made with earlier versions, situation is the same.
I used resetting to factory settings. Nothing changed.
I have Linux 32-bit version. nVidia GT240 card. It has worked with Blender a long time. As far as I know, newer drivers don’t add anything for a card this old. Also, it doesn’t have problems with 2.76, for example.
Latest version builds seem to use newer libs than I have. I may try to compile Blender myself later.
So. Seems that I need to go back to older versions for now.
In Blender root dir there’s a script named blender-softwaregl. With that I can use 2.78a. However, it seems to be less responsive than 2.76, so I guess it’s partial or full software OpenGL emulation. I suppose I’m going back to older version. Disappointing, but understandable. Blender can’t be expected to serve top of line rigs and oldest boxes forever.
