2 Materials for one mesh (Edit Mode)

Hello guys!
I want to ask, if there is a possibility so I can use more materials in one object, but on different places? Made no sence. I know. Here is an image (example):

For example, I want to change material for the selected face, but the rest has the original. Hope I explained that correctly now. I’m not good English-speaker

I am using both Blender Render and Cycles Render and I can “convert” the project, so I’m fine with both. If you can, explain both (if you can, or course).

Thanks for Help, Nico

Read the manual entry for assigning materials https://www.blender.org/manual/render/blender_render/materials/assigning_a_material.html?highlight=multiple
Watch a video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-ZC155hC7Q

Create one material and it will be applied to all the faces, then create a new material and assign it to the selected faces. The exact same process is used for both Blender Render and Cycles Render
