I’d do something, but I’m at school and I really, REALLY shouldn’t be online right now.
Now this is something I wish I’d had the opportunity to enter last year.
One stupid question though, External renderers allowed, are there any restrictions to which?
IE Does it have to be a Blender supported renderer like Yafray?
Or can I use 3DSMax? :<

Blender must be used for modelling but can be rendered in something like Yafray. However, I am considering adding bonus points to those F1 fanatics (like me) who do the whole enchilada (F1 car) exclusively in Blender (like it was in the previous years). Doing this will encourage learning the finer points of Blender lighting and texturing. Call me a purist but that’s how I feel. Raytracing and all of that is great but you learn more if you try to figure it out in Blender only. I figure this will help the newbies more than the gurus. When I make up my mind I will post it in the F1 Challenge Rules section.
Does that mean texturing and lighting can be done in an external app, as long as the modeling is in Blender?

The main focus of the picture have to be the carbody? What I have in my mind is a particular moment during a race, so it won’t be like an auto trade show or a still car in a garage… is that ok?

To be more especific, I’m planning a shot from the driver’s point of view.
emtilt (and everyone else)-- I could see where this could get confusing as to what is allowed and what is not but the main idea is to use Blender. From the way I see it, I may have only two options at this point:
- Go back to the way it was done in previous years and allow ONLY Blender to be used for the entire scene (modelling, texturing, lighting and rendering) or…
- Open the contest to all apps and make it a free-for-all (and I would have to change the name of the contest
).
What is everyones opinion on this subject?
Apollux-- You can do whatever you want with the scene. There are no restrictions in composition. I number of past entries have been “race” scenes.

I’m with S68… Blender Only !!!
Although I don’t use it, I think Yafray should be allowed since they have worked so hard to make it a natural extension of Blender.

Third year for me, no reason not to enter this time :]
Allowing Yafray would mean that any external renderer should be allowed to be fair. Some may prefer Lightflow over Yafray. If Yafray was an integrated part of Blender (wouldn’t THAT be cool) then that would be different.
I am leaning towards making it Blender only. I will decide this weekend and posted any changes on the F1 web site.
I am also looking for ideas for prizes. I have usually presented prizes from the Blender store but it would be nice to have something different. Keep in mind that I pay for the prizes myself so keep the suggestions reasonable… 
Some of my ideas are:
- a new video card
- a tee shirt with your F1 image on it
- gift certificate to Amazon or Barnes and Noble or ?
- a full color poster of your F1 image
Also, this discussion should probably be moved to the Contest forum, no?
another question: is post processing allowed?
…anything from retouching little mistakes, adding glow and flares to painting cracks and little details into the image…
glow and color/ gamma correction would be enough though.

I really like those two! I would shy away from offering computer hardware unless you allow the winner to pick it out themself because everybody has their own preference and maby the winner likes what they have already?
t-shirt with the F1 would be nice, unless there’s some Ka’Ra book somewhere (hint hint)

If you still want to place more traditional e-shop stuff them my suggestion would be the texture disk.
