Using 2.57. Trying to position the 3D cursor in mid-air in a concave part of an object. Every time I click, it moves where I want as seen in the 2D projection I’m working in, but it moves along the line of sight to land on the nearest surface. This is annoying and prevents me from putting it where it needs to go.
The 2.4x versions never did this, and I’ve got a good year and a half experience, no wait, two years experience by now, with 2.49 so I’m past all the noobie misunderstandings.
Probably while screwing around with the new 2.57 GUI, I clicked some option checkbox with no understanding of what I was doing. Or maybe this is a bug?
I have been using 2.57a and b, and haven’t seen this behaviour yet. I tried turning on snapping to see if that was causeing it, and no dice. Maybe it is a setting, can you afford to reload the default blend?
I could make the problem suddenly disappear by restoring defaults, but it would be nice to know what’s causing this. Maybe someday, I will want this effect.
Aha, found it. It’s the checkbox “Auto Depth” in the preferences window, Interface tab. The tooltip speaks only of pan/rotate/zoom not locating the 3D cursor. The tooltip is in error, or the checkbox is short-circuited to some other option.
