3d max Nurms equviliant in Blender?

Right now I am following along The Joan of arc tutorial originally written for 3d max, and on the first page of modeling the body it say to add the mesh modifier NURMS to the mesh, which Blender does not have. So it looked like it was basically subsurf with smoothing turned on, but the problem is when I use subsurf it sort of “shrinks” the mesh and this is really annoying when switching between the subsurf mesh veiw and non subsurf mesh. Is this the way I should be doing it in blender, or is there a differn’t option I should be useing in place of NURMS?
