Is there an open source, or otherwise free, object/material/mesh/model online library that exists? Where all the content is free and anyone can contribute?
blendernation put up a link a while back to a site where someone had made a huge list of 3d model sites. i’ll try to find it.

it would be nice to have a blender 3d assets website, sort of like google 3d warehouse.http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/.
Not everything is free but you can find pretty much everything there. A lot of it is free and it has a huge library and in depth search engine
google warehouse is great, its just importing and expoting thats hard.
You can also visit www.sharecg.com and do a search by licenses. Choose Unrestricted. There is a lot of stuff there and you can specify file format and category.
