3D view locked to object mode

Hey blenderheads,

today I started my laptop to continue working on my last project and was shocked when nothing happened when I pressed TAB. The dropdown-selection for edit mode and all the other modes is vanished too.
So I’m literally locked to the object mode. Need your help guys.

There was nothing I changed since I used blender yesterday except the battery.

Have you selected an object to edit (not a camera or lamp)

Make sure you have an editable object selected (Mesh, Curve, Surface, Armature etc). Note that lights, cameras, empties, and speakers don’t have an editmode.
