That looks interesting. I wonder how much it can replace substance.
3DCoat 2021.01 and 3DCTextura Released !
Our next-gen version of 3DCoat comes with an array of new innovative features and tools, all to make your production process faster and smoother. A completely new Brush Engine, rich Curves Toolset, Low-Poly Modeling, Smart Retopo, New GUI, Sculpt Layers are just a few things to mention. Check out 3DCoatās 2021 feature set and watch the video demonstrations presented on our website.
One important change in the licensing policy is that 3DCoat 2021 will become practically FREE to learn and practice for as long as you wish! Once the fully functional 30-day trial expires, you will be able to continue using the program in the so called āLearning Modeā, where you can save your creations in the internal .3b format, and even export your models into external formats with limitations, free-of-charge. This should remove the boundaries for the artists who are new to 3DCoat and would like to spend more time learning the capabilities of the program before making a decision on the license.
Speaking about the Licensing Policies with 3DCoat 2021, we have those updated and weāll be introducing more licensing options with regards to the Individual and Company customers, as well as licenses for Universities and Students. When it comes to the Purchasing options, weāll have it all from the good-old one-time-purchase permanent license to the various renting plans, and even something unique as a Rent-to-Own option, where we offer the customers to buy out their permanent license through renting and paying out the license by installments. This will be a great way to get a permanent license without the need to pay a sizeable amount of money at once!
Those who already own a previous version of 3DCoat (V2-V4) will be able to upgrade to 3DCoat 2021, starting from July 5th once the 2021 version becomes available. The cost of the upgrade will vary, depending on the license type and the time of purchase, but usually it will be a fraction of the full license cost (or even free in case you purchased a 3DCoat V4 Professional license after 1 August 2020 till 5 July 2021 and get upgraded to 3DCoat 2021 Individual license). With the upgrade you will receive 12 months of free program updates.
On top of 3DCoat 2021, we will also introduce a completely Free library of high-quality PBR Scans, samples, masks and relief (of approx. 2500 files in total), downloadable in portions every month. Every month the users will receive 120 units, which they can spend on Smart Materials, samples, masks etc of their choice and download those for free.
Last, but not least, we are introducing a very new product in the 3DCoat family! 3DCoatTextura is a tailored version of 3DCoat 2021 which has all its professional tools for 3D Painting/Texturing and Rendering at a more affordable price. In simple terms 3DCoatTextura is a special version of 3DCoat which has all its Painting/Texturing and Rendering capabilities. It is designed especially for people who create 3D models in other software and need a professional tool for Painting/Texturing at a very sweet price, as well as with the option of Rent-to-own.
Whatās the deal with the āOur voiceā page of the company?
Why would they bring religion in the marketing of their product?
Thatās super odd, like, āThis is our 3D design tools, donāt use it to represent a wizard, thatās against our beliefs.ā
I would follow a āplease donāt use 3D in general to bring hatred to othersā but this is something else.
I mean itās their product, they can do what they want, but I think this a marketing āfaux pasā. I donāt think itās the place for that.
That has been on their site forever. Its not part of their license and even the way its written there its not demanded or required, its merely expressed as a wish with a lot of preaching to go along with it.
In fact they specifically state it:
We can not (and donāt want and are not going to) control your activity (our EULA do not have such limitations). This is our appeal and not a legal demand.
Is it a marketing āfaux pasā? Depends on your viewpoint I guess.
It is of little importance to their actual product(s) though imo.
There is nothing wrong with a Christian wanting to run his business in accordance with his faith, as scripture commands the faith be lived out everywhere and its values displayed everywhere and not just within the 4 walls of a church building.
Keep in mind that businesses run in accordance with Christian values is exceedingly rare these days, and I myself like having the option to see what a brother or sister in Christ has to offer (in areas such as sculpting and texturing) before considering a secular company such as Pixologic (that is assuming I ever choose to create a 3D pipeline that is more than just Blender).
That said, the webpage talking about the new features clearly shows he is not just relying on religious appeal here.
Thatās all nice and fine, but they are in the business of creating tools for artists.
If somebody uses/misuses their tool for creating nasty things that incite hatred or glorifies satanism or whatever then this is fully the responsibility of the artist, nobody can blame them for that - the same way nobody can blame an manufacturer of knifes if somebody uses them to hurt/murder somebody.
It has nothing to do with running the business in accordance with faith, it seems to me as an rather odd way of advocating or promoting their belief.
In the past this was tied to the EULA or at least they pretend it was and there where some cases of people getting in trouble with their licenses.
Not every artists is an Christian and therefore not bound by the moral rules of Christianity so many people thought that was unprofessional and kinda reprehensible.
I just think they handled and communicated that very poorly and as a consequence the got a weird reputation, people made fun of them, avoided their tools and this had cost them a lot of customers/licenses.
That being said, the tool looks nice and quite powerful, I am very curious what it has to offer and hope it truly is a full alternative for Substance Painter and if it is, I think this might become a successful tool in the toolset of many artists (me possibly included).
All I can say is that I can see his point. I myself would be disappointed if I started selling assets I made in Blender only to find people using them for explicit or otherwise X-rated pursuits. Sure, the optics would be bad if I could reach in and yank away their copy, but it does not mean I have to unconditionally agree with the way they are being used.
Sure, he makes tools for artists, but just because you go into business selling a product by no means should become a mandate to check any values you hold at the door. Then there is the fact that artists have choice in the area, by no means is anyone requiring artists to purchase a 3D Coat/Textura license.
I think I still stop here, as this leads to a much larger issue in general that is an entirely different thread.
Assets are different than tools. You can restrict usage of assets via user agreement or copyright.
You cannot restrict usage of a tool, that does not fall under copyright and artistic freedom has a higher weight in any court of law. Your disagreement has no weight.
Thatās my point, they never had any control over what artists do with their tool, their wishes are not legally enforcible.
But they have long stopped this, so it makes no reason to argue about it.
Iām downloading Textura as we speak. Wanna see how it works.
Maybe instead of Textura they should have called it New Textament!
I think the sensible choice would have been 3D Coating.
Bruh they backtracked on the āenforcementā in like 2005. 3dcoatās used at Goddamn Id software. They canāt do shit about it.
They harassed ONE guy about it over a decade ago. Theyāve grown up since.
Iāve never understood the religious stance against Id software. Iāve played all the Dooms over the years, and none of them are exactly extoling a pro-demon message.
Please let us know what you find.
Double post, but to anyone. Anyone use 3D Coat?
Anyone used Textura?
I use 3d coat from time to time.
If Substance Painter is a very good choice for painting and mixing materials, 3d coat remains the best tool for painting displacement and color.
In addition, whether in voxels or dynamic tessellation, the power of sculpting tools, the number of polygons that can be sculpted remains unparalleled. (more than 50 millions in dynamic tesselation)
Cool. Regarding the last bit⦠Isnāt Zbrush more efficient?
We commonly sculpt on models that are 100s of millions. But to be fair not always all on one subtool. For example a peek over the shoulder of my lead sculptor the other day and the one subtool was 60+ million. The file had multiple subtools though. And that brought it up over 200 million.
That is one advantage of Zbrush is the subtool system. Does 3D coat have this?
By the way I own 3D Coat but never use it. Thinking also about 3D Textura.
I wanted to try it out, and give a quick writeup, but I havenāt had nearly as much time as I thought I would here recently. Itāll be a minute before Iām able to really give a go.
