I work a full time job which makes it hard to spend to work in blender. Are there any 5 minute subdiv challenges that can be used for gradual growth that you would recommend?
Hello !
5 minutes is very short, so unless you’re amazingly good this isn’t great for practice.
You can look at 10 minutes challenges to see this is already tough and ask for quite mastery in modeling and shape management :
I would recommend something more like 1 hour or 30mn at least. It depends on your level. Those exercise they will help you to consolidate what you already have but you won’t learn new things given the short timeframe. But it’s worth a try anyway !
If you want to do that with other people , look for speed modeling challenge or SMC , it’s a common exercise so you can probably find something. I don’t have one to recommend as I’m more into slow modeling , but it’s fun to do once in a while !
Completely agree. Speed runs don’t help you build modeling skill. Speed naturally just comes with mastering the tools and techniques.
Yes ! SMC can be a good exercise but it’s indeed limited !
You can learn time management, to be more efficient, to tell more with less and stuff like that.
It’s also helping to not think too much and by the end of the hour you have some sort of finished stuff which is rewarding …
Now I also agree that there is a tendency to value speed in some beginner’s artwork and it’s probably not the right direction to reach a better level. At least we look at the result and we don’t care how much time you spend, if it’s rushed it shows.
Indeed at some point the most important is being able to make stuff looks good, and eventually you keep practicing to do that also fast…
Anyway, here I think the goal is just to find opportunities to practice 3D without a lot of time to invest which is fine and understandable when it’s not your main activity …
I would agree with what everybody else has said, 5 minutes is a really short period of time. I would suggest starting with at least 20-30 minutes, although I generally find 1 hour is the best for basic practice.
There are lots of videos online showing speed modelling challenges, although it does come with time. As you learn more and get better, you will get quicker.
What can be done in 5 minutes seems to be about combining shapes.
I can try creating various conditions, but I’m not sure whether they will actually be helpful.
However, I think it helps in maintaining a sense of topology modeling.

There is this guy, most tutorials are not that long and they are fantastic resource for subD modelling.
Not all are in Blender either, but the techniques remain the same.
