Here is the original “meme” in case you’re interested: http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/48293If you follow the standard convention there is only one answer, but because people can interpret the equation in so many ways it simply is bad idea to write it like that in the first place…
(6/2) * (1 + 2) = 6 / 2 * (1 + 2) - These two terms are mathematically equivalent. We always hold division/multiplication with equal precedence, evaluating left to right. A parenthesis around 6/2 is meaningless in this case.
(3)3 = 3 * 3 - Again they are mathematically equivalent, the multiplication is always implied, if it is not written.
So its not “either 6/(2(1+2)) or it’s (6/2)(1+2)” because the term 6/2(1+2) written in the first post is mathematically sound. Since the parenthesis do not exist around (2(1+2)), we do not take them into account.
There is no maybe, or assumptions that they [the parenthesis] might exist. That’s why we have them in the first place. If they exist, its to show us that it is A/(BC), if they don’t exist, that means the author of the question is showing us he means A/BC
It’s 6 / 2 (1 + 2) which is mathematically equivalent to 6 / 2 * (1 + 2)
This is then (as stated above) solved with the parenthesis first:
6 / 2 * 3
And the left to right:
3 * 3 = 9
Why the hell is this thread in this “Blender and CG discussions”?
This is not even a maths question. This is not what maths is about.
how in the world is this not a math question
Well someone has to decide an order of operations to follow for ambiguous expressions.
The goal of such an order is nothing but to remove ambiguity. There is no mathematical logic involved in it.
If you can solve such a problem, it tells nothing about your mathematical abilities.
There should be one more option that is “Google”
I just copy the expression and paste it in google and the answer was 9.
Sorry to say but don’t have mind (Brain) to solve that.
I think I have learn something before in class, BODMAS, that means Bracket, Divide, Multiply, Add and Subtract and that is how that can be solved. Maybe and not sure.
I’m inclined to see this the same as Phillipe from Canada.
If this expression was set up algebraically
The expresison to get 9 when m = 6, n = 2 it would be written,
m(n+1)/n
common factors on the left, divisors on the right of the expression in the braces, well formed, no ambiguity
hence to me, the equation
m / n(n+1)
reads m over n times (n+1)
m / n(n + 1)
The “implied” applied to me is
= m / (n * (n + 1))
= m / (n*n + n)
not back thru the divisor.
zeealpal, who are you referring to when you speak for “we”, mathematicians or programmers? There’s no doubt if i crunch 6 / 2 * (2+1) into python I’ll get 9… wonder what I’d get in Maple.
+1
By the way, this post is shitty spam.
The expression is not well defined with infix notation. Two possible graph representations. How to correct? Postfix? Prefix?
Like headaches?

I won’t keep this in Dropbox for very long.
Why is this The Off Topic subforum if it has to pertain to Blender?
I cant download >.<
Frankly, I’m a writer…not a mathematician. So I’m not answering. Besides…this post is a form of spam.
Its an easy question to get wrong, but if done correctly the answer is the same even if I presented it as:
6
2(1+2)
I can see how hard it would be to determine what is mathematically correct in this case, is it 6/6 or is it 33, if I use the order in which it is presented then the answer (parenthesis, devision, multiplication) is 33, which holds true regardless of the format, now if I explicitly wrote the equation:
6/(2(1+2))
or
6
(2(1+2))
The answer would be 6/6.
EDIT: this is incorrect.
Hmm…I suspect that what you may have made here is a fraction.
If i just ignore the 6 at the top of the line, i come to find that the bottom portion of the problem is 2•(1+2)
Now using basic algebra concepts (which may be PEMDAS but it’s been so long), i come out to 6 (2•3=6).
Ultimately you get a fraction of 6/6 which is a whole.
By definition, this leaves me two possible answers listed on the poll.
1 if, say, you are looking for the whole of the fraction or
6 if you merely want me to ignore the six above the fraction bar.
HOWEVER: I do not trust my own mathematic ability for the life of me and I suspect this poll is set up for a purpose more than testing but also for humiliation…in which case my waver is the fact that I may be incorrect mathematically anyways regardless of many algebraically structured problems.
i didnt even pay attention it wasn’t addidtion lol… nice job
Ironically, the title of the tab says “SpacetimeEmbeddedIntellegence.pdf - Simplify your life”
If the math is performed correctly the answer is 9, like I said even if I wrote it as:
6
2(1+2)
Many would argue that the equation written as presented above would be solved as:
6
2(1+2)
6
2(3)
6
6
1
In my opinion this is false as it ignores the obvious fact that the devision is being presented first, so unless the denominator is isolated by parenthesis the equation should be solved in sequence, using the order of operations, if not, there really wouldn’t be a standard method to solve an equation such as this.
6
2(1+2)
6
2(3)
3(3)
In order to get 1 as the correct answer the equation would be written as:
6
(2(1+2))
or:
6/(2(1+2))
not:
6/2(1+2) because it now equals 9 and so should:
6
2(1+2)
Many would say that (1+2) is now being multiplied by the denominator, I would say that it is being multiplied by the fraction, or devision problem, you may feel otherwise, or that the parenthesis are implied, I think that an equation must be presented in a format that is not up to debate, implying parenthesis is contradictory to that.
EDIT: Also incorrect 6/2(1+2) does not equal:
6
2(1+2)
nom nom, ignore the ignorance!
