'65 Toy Plane

Hello Blender Artists!!

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? First of all, since I’m posting here I thought I’d just say I’m so so excited to be involved in Durian. I know how much you guys care about it and I’m going to work as hard as I can to make it the best it can be.

We’ve got a great team already, but to be honest I feel I have the weakest Blender skills in the group! It’s been a while since I’ve done any serious work in Blender, so that’s why I’ve decided to start this WIP.

So. I’m currently making a live-action film called “En Route”, and it involves a fair amount of visual effects. Although I have a team of a half-dozen vfx artists working on the film, I decided to take a chunk of the work myself. While they’re all working with Maya and Nuke and Shake, I’m of course going to be working 100% in Blender. (Or as close to it as possible!)

So there’s a scene in my movie that’s supposed to take place around the year 1967, where a kid is playing with a toy plane in his room and he accidentally crashes it to pieces. The plane splits apart and crumbles in many parts on the floor.

Here’s the picture of the prop. (It’s actually a vintage toy plane from 1965!)

And a sample of one of the plates the broken plane will be in:

So I’m going to start by modeling the whole plane first and getting it as close to photoreal as possible, and then work on breaking the pieces, lighting and animating them. I’m gonna try to comp them in Blender as well.

So, you gotta start somewhere, right?

More soon!

Maybe you have the weakest blender skills, but I guess you have the strongest film making and story telling skills. I think both of those were lacking a bit in peach, so you will make a great contribution anyway.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plane project turns out.

Thanks Mazui.

hey it’s looking pretty spot to me dude, i am eagar to see some color

Yay! Took me a while, but I think I’m nearly done with materials and textures. Still have some things to tweak, like the little pink pilots and such. But what do you think?

The passenger windows looks a bit uneven behind the wing.

Otherwise it’s very good.

Don’t forget to texture the front wheel.

IMO i think that this uneven windows adds some sensation of reality, don’t forget that it’s a toy plane, and is used.
Cheers!

Wow, that looks great! That can pass as a photo, i think th video will be great.

yeah, you can see warping in the ref photos. I think the wings could use a litle warping as well, tho. The rear wings look like they’re slightly warped upward, and the main wings look like they’ve got some slight ‘S’-shaped warping towards their back-end. The blue seems a little lighter in the ref as well.

Damn nice job, overall.

Good luck to you on this and with Durian as well.
