8 bit Texture Compression (Bright 181)

Hey Everyone,

I have seen this topic here before. Since I started UV mapping my memory usage has been very high. So I asked my brother if knew of some compression software he sent me a link to epicgames.com and told me this is the best software he has seen. Its called “Bright” (appears to only for windows) it converts 24bit .bmp’s into 8bit .tga’s and leaves almost no artifact that can be seen. I downloaded the “bright 181.zip”.

This is the best color reduction algorithm that I’ve seen. No wonder it’s epic’s trade secret. So we can now use 1/3 of the memory (or three times as many texture maps) in our renderings or real-time apps. It’s very effecient. Thanks for the link.
