A Bit of a Rant: Demos and Tutorials That Suck

While browsing the web, I have noticed a sort of trend occurring amongst demos and tutorials… A phenomenon which I’d like to overcome…

Watch these two bomb videos, and you’ll start to see what I mean…

They are kind of a spin-off of a fuse tutorial I have seen, like this…

Now - okay - the black vaporizing thingy is cool, and I’d love to see a tutorial on it… But - when it comes to the bombs… it’s like, what do you expect? I expect to see the bomb explode… but, like, the bombs dont explode…

I’ve seen this “lack” happen in other tutorials, especially like water… I kind of most people just make a video of water splashing down into a domain, but isnt it more often that water gets poured from one thing to another?

I dont know where I am headed with all this, but I guess I’d just like to see more demos and tutorials “with a purpose” (so to speak).

Does anyone agree? Or am I just flipping out a bit?

I understand where you’re coming from. I’d like to see more tutorials that actually walk you through an entire project and show you how Blender tools are applied to solve various problems.

Generally, you’re right: There is a need for higher-quality tutorials.

But, for the examples you listed, I think you’re “flipping out a bit”; For small demos that those videos represent, they’re just fine (the fact that the bomb doesn’t explode is disappointing, but, unless “Exploding Bomb” is the title of the video, it does nothing to change the “validity” of the demo).

I created two video tutorial series (about the blender game engine) where I do just that.

The “Turret Defense” and “Tunnel Runner” series can be found on my tutorials page:
