a few display and uv issues

Ok, iv been trying to get this working for a few hours,

  1. lighting, ramp, and most effects wont show in normal view, realtime, or in renders. is there something i must set my preferences to to show these or do i need to re install something?

  2. i cant apply uv maps to my models, i can make uv maps, but i cant import and apply them to m y models for some reason. Now i import the image and set the coordinates to uv along wih setting the layer to the uv texture layer, but my model ust apears either white or renders using one material stretched across the whole thing.

i know its still in beta but i just watched a tutorial from cg masters and there lighting effects and uv maps work just fine. also, alt+Z just changes my mode to texture mode and does not apply materials for some reason

Select textured view mode and in the display / shading properties settings (N) select GLSL
If your image appears white it hasn’t got a texture applied to it in its material settings.
Add a link to your blend file as that is by far the simplest way to see what you are doing wrong.
