A font experiment

<< note: these were all created w blender combined with a font making program>> this is an example of a single font i made with a shareware program called ‘Font Creator’. I used a regular bit map, in this case a picture of some text. So, even though my creation appears as text, it could have been anything. This is the font I made for the number 1. It doesn’t resemble a numeral, but hey. Seemed handy. http://home.att.net/~zolgnar/index.html/FontExp1.JPG

here’s the second one i made. Just scribbled it w my mouse. One thing I noted: If you make a complicated font such as this one, you will run into trouble during the various size/bevel operations. I tried to slick up this one, and it grew some weird extensions during the process. Hmmm. On the other hand, it took no time to create. <shrug> http://home.att.net/~zolgnar/index.html/BFont.JPG

seems this post should belong to ‘Other Softwares’ and not in News & Chat…

besides, latest Blender can manage loads of TTF fonts, so the old PS1 fonts and some extra tools are not needed anymore

Sorry still getting used to the forum. %|

no problem…that’s why we old users are here for to guide you

Just to clarify,…with this method, you are not limited to what one typically considers a font… it could be anything with a flat shape that you can draw in black and white. The real beauty of it though, is, once you have loaded your custom font/alphabet, virtually every key on your keyboard becomes a hotkey to call up, a wrench, a gasket, a stone tile, whatever you can think up! My choice of letters in the example was completely arbitrary. I will make a zip once I’ve finished an entire alphabet. ( it’s shareware so I will have to do it before the 30 days! :-? )—<<edit>>— Here, this should make it more clear. This is numeral 2 in the same alphabet as the Blender one. ===> http://home.att.net/~zolgnar/index.html/fontleroy.JPG
I simply fooled around w repeating it a bit. I did the original map for it in photoshop with the angular select tool, and the paintbucket tool.

Some time ago i had the idea of making a “BlenderDings” font, containing several shapes (stars, bubbles, boxes, gears whatever) that are not easy to do with curves (for beginners).
It’s still on the to-do list, but meanwhile i switched to Linux and i don’t have the time. But all the tools are available, and i did some tests.
When i asked, what shapes it should contain, i did not get much response, so i don’t know if such a font is needed. But i use fonts to get shapes from Sketch ors Sodipodi to blender via PfaEdit. It’s better than importing 2d dxf’s, which is unusable in my opinion.

A couple that I was thinking might be useful: Sci Fi panel bits, and miscilaneous decorative, such as door hinges, decorative carving, etc, or archetectural elements. also you could set one up to be combined with itself to form provocative shapes. Another one: Gears, and general clockwork type stuff. the usage of such fonts could make setting up a scene quick indeed, and might be particularly useful in the game engine, seeing as fonts are fairly simple objects and would not likely be a source of lag!
