if you can model ok high poly, and you can UV map, but have trouble with low poly, or just planning your polys, try this:
make a model and UV map it.
load a blank image onto it and go into texture paint mode.
paint a representation of how you would like the polys to be on the surface of your mesh. you might want to paint little red dots where the vertices would be.
subdivide the model so it’s dense.
in textured mode, move your cursor over one of the red dots.
tab into edit mode, and select the vertex beneath your cursor.
go back into object mode and position your cursor over the next dot.
tab into edit mode, and shift R click to select it.
continue doing this until you have a few polys worth of vertices selected, then duplicate them with shift D
his select swap and then ‘hide’ and face the vertices.
hey what do you know, it’s low poly! when you’re finished, just seperate the new object with P.
<edit> btw i noticed, on some models, the selection doesn’t get saved every time you enter/exit edit mode, so, what i have been doing on those is make a new vertex group, and every time you add a vertex to the selection just click ‘assign’
Exactly for that, cause what my homebrewn, camera.based 3D-Scanner spits out is otherwise hard to process.
But what is if one takes someone elses model to remodel something under his name. Has a little strange taste, cause technically you even improve this creation. Whereever i look deeper into copyrights and patents stuff i can always create juridicial and moralic vicious circles. That sucks.
What do you think:
Remodeled, newly UVed and textured does that give you already a right?
Finally i come to the conclusion that thoughts are free, people trying to imprison them for power and money, have to twist their own and other minds. Thats considerably less nice than copying.
well,…you can’t blame the tool for what people use it for. if someone did use this technique to reproduce someone elses model, for commercial purposes, that would probably be legal technically, but maybe not very nice. anyway, some people use their hands to steal,…we can’t very well go around cutting them off though.
<edit> oh btw, during refacing, it helps if you turn up the vertex size in themes, so you can then overlay your new mesh on the old one as reference when filling out the polys.
