A good pattern tile material

What is the best way to make a pattern/tiled material that can wrap around a sphere without much distortion? Like, say I want to make a material that is a bunch of octogons that deform the mesh, and I want this effect to be consistent without stretching, can you guys tell me which method is best?

Another problem I’ve been having: Lets say I make a bunch of tubes using beveled bezier curves, and I want to make them look like vacuum hoses or borg style cables, I imagine I could make a repeating pattern (as it is in the nature of patterns to repeat) that duplicates up the hose. Whats the best way to do this so that stretching doesn’t occur with different cable lengths?
