Sculpted in sculptris. Material, texture and lighting done in Blender. rendered with Cycles.

No. There is a misunderstanding… Purple is a noble color in Japan.

I think the points are these,

High Contrast
Rather saturated color
A.O. looks like outlines

You noticed something ?
I changed an expression of eyes a bit!

If you want to see the original render, here it is.
SSS makes soft and smooth surface.
Red and blue lights from opposite direction helps a cartoony look to this a bit.

Added a spotlight from below and took away light reflections in eyes.
