A Merry Little Christmas

Hey!

This is a project I have been working on for a lot of hours for the last two/three weeks and even though I feel like I am spending twice as much time on it as I can, I am still not happy with the result. As the deadline to the BG christmas contest is getting closer (and I have a huge school project the coming week) I think I really need to get some feedback on this project even though I would have liked to work more on it before sharing it.

The lighting was - and is - my biggest problem. Most of it is faked since I found it hard to make a couple of “global-lights” light up all the characters in the way I wanted. Instead of “global-lights” I have used separate rim and key lights for most of the characters. This, however, messed up the realism of the lightning a bit, I’m afraid.

Anyway… I know that a lot of things are wrong with this image, but I would love to hear what you think I should work on and improve.

Thank you!

Old render:

Looks Great!
Though I got a suggestion:
“Blue light generally looks great with orange light. I suggest that you add some more orange light to the scene to go with all that blue light.”

Looking Good! I like the scene’s composition and your use of the wires as guiding lines. I agree with JustNat. I think that some orange light would really help this scene. Also I feel like the focus of the image is a bit broad, like I’m not sure what the focus of the image is right away, the tree? Or the guy plugging it in? Logic says the tree but my eyes still wander around the image a bit.

A possibility is that you could light the tree up a bit more. The warm light color would make around the tree feel more cozy and it’s help focus the image as well.

All in all looking good though. Keep it up!

Thank you guys!
Very helpful feedback! My original idea was to put in the blue light as a contrast to the yellow/orange light on the tree and the skin of the characters, but yea… I probably added too much blue. At the moment I am rendering a new render where I added a couple of orange point lights to light up the ground and characters around the tree.
The update is hopefully coming soon! Thanks again!

Finally!
I really shoud be sleeping now, but here it is.
The biggets problem I have to fix right now is that the faces of the two characters ‘behind’ the tree are too bright and lack shadows. I am not sure how to fix it without some serious cheating, but I will see what I can do tomorrow. I also tried adding volumetrics to get the feeling of the tree lighting up the atmosphere in the room, but the render times were just tooo long!

I might have overdone the color-thing, but I do like the effect it has on the image. What do you think?
