A new comer?

This is a small piece that I will be working on this weekend. The concept behind the scene is very simple, a beach rock, spots a new comer. By the end of the project, I hope to achieve realism and a some good composition in the shot.
I know it may not look like much yet, but hopefully by the end of tomorrow it will be! Here are the bare basics of the scene (sand, sky, beach, water, DOF , proper lighting, will all be added soon.

This sounds cool. I look forward to seeing your progress.

OK, here is a quick update! Materials have been added to the rocks and the ground. Looks a bit shoddy still, but I am in the process of creating the environment, so hopefully that, with a bit more DOF will make these guys fit right in! Comments are much appreciated.

This is just a test of an environment. As you can probably see, its nothing special, and the viewing angle and angle of the beach in incorrect, but this is just a test. I will be fixing all these problems shortly. Comments appreciated!

Here is another quick update. The hideous line between the foreground and the environment has been removed, and highlights have been altered. Thoughts?

Well, I like your idea. However, I’m unsure how realistic you’re going to get with the floating rock on top of the other one. I understand you want it to look like a head, but as it is floating, it will not work unless you either put a smaller rock under it for a neck, or situate the rock on the body rock a bit better.

But that’s only my critique. Otherwise, keep it up.

The definition of realistic more had to do with the textures and materials, as opposed to everything looking like plastic:P But I will look into that.

add some more DoF to sell this image, i love it… good job man!

more dof? no, id say less

Thanks for the comments guys! I’ve tried the image with both less and more DOF, and I do think it needs a little less. I will output my final WIP image (I’m hoping :P) tonight for you guys to critique and comment on:)

OK guys here is the latest image. It has slightly less DOF than the previous image and is Higher-Res. I don’t think I will be adopting the idea of putting a rock under the head, as I like the affect the floating rock has on the composition of the image (I don’t want the left side to be cluttered.) Tell me what you think of this.

Nicely done!! Looking pretty realistic, except… The background is ruining it for me. I realize it’s a background image and you probably added DOF to the pic, but the problem is it has the same DOF. The beach chairs are closer to the rocks than the cliff on the right side, yet they have amount of focus. The cliff needs to be blurred more or the chairs less.

It’s better than I can do, I’m not any good at combining blender objects with background images.

Randy

Ah how did I miss that! Thanks Revolt_Randy! I have fixed that in this latest image.
OK so here are the 2 variations of the final images. These two images have varying RGB curves, and I would like to know which one takes your fancy most! Comments please!

The second one stands out more… it is more vibrant.

Looks good, I like the 2nd one better tbh, it seems to have a bit more contrast.
