A pen

Well, I saw the other projects and got so bad :b. This guys make things that i couldn’t dream with. BUT im trying to, then here is my third or fourth model, a pen. I had a pen on my desk and then I saw it, it saw me and then I did it. Please, I want to improve my work, but it will happen only if u help me ;). (I attached 2 images, one with a quick node compositing, the other is the original) Thx for the patience,
Henrique

To dark, add some light and meaby reduce the mirroring of the plane,to make it more realistic.
Nice pen and welcome

Well, at least its a begining =D im going to change the setting later, thx for the comment

The end of the pen looks too soft, almost like it’s an eraser. Besides that it looks very real.

Well, my pen (the reference) is like that, the end is not flat, its rounded, a bit thiner than this one (i can’t change it by now) but rounded, soft. I can make a flat end, if u like, but I’d rather rounded to flat.

You could place some kinda image above it can have something to reflect. Unless you’d prefer some kinda studio lighting set up?

the bacground and stuff is really crappy, but its just an example. I modeled my classroom’s table (but i don’t know how to make a grainy effect) and put a floor and some spot lights. The reflection is a classroom image, but u can’t see it clearly, i’ll change it later. Anyway, I still want to improve it (besides the reflection and background changes), and i’d appreciate another comment =D

Im not a fan of the blue table especially since you have a blue pen. Also try out some different shaders for the material of the pen. I forget which one itis now, but theres one that is better for plastic. Also try making the specularity harder. I tiny bit of reflectivity might work nicely too.

Hope that helps!

Ok then, as this pen was really ugly and stuff (at least to me) i decided to do another one, bit more detailed and stuff.

I started it and im doing it slowly, just for fun, but i’ve been passing through a problem.
As you can see here the base mesh is kinda weird. I can’t smooth it wisely, the smooth just changes the way lighting gets to the model. As i joined 2 meshes, the base and the part that joins the head into the base (its hidden behind the head, and idk how could I call this part, iIll show you later). Well, if someone got a hint or something
i’d appreciate a lot =D.

Well, here is the render (i know its really bad, but thats just the idea, lighting and background and stuff =D) Comment please =D

Here’s a tip, area lights work best for studio lighting conditions.

just be sure to turn down the distance and increase the sample size (for soft shadows).

Much better background (perhaps a little to bright). For the smoothing problem: If you set the Shading to Smooth and then add an EdgeSplit modifier it will find the sharp angles and shade them as angles instead of trying to smooth them, try that.

Interesting lighting, but it seems like the pencil is floating a bit

Good work though, I’m not trying to bash your work, I’m just trying to make it better.

Fxstudios: i understand that man, I don’t care if u give me a critic, thats just great =D (the idea u gave me didn’t work, but as the base mesh is transparent, there’s no problem)
Digitalwolf: great hint, i’ll post the result in a bit, my pc is rendering ;b (the shadows got very nice, thank u; this illumination is from area light already, i saw it in a tutorial and i liked it, the effects achieved are impressive, most part of them ;b)

Very nice looking. Much better than the original pen ; )

i worked on the proportions and im going to make the grip (the blue part in the last pen) but now I’ve to leave, i’ll post the render on monday, and then im going to work on a pencil and later on an eraser =D. (thx for the "nice looking ;b)
ps: i couldn’t change the floating sensation, i know thats weird’, but by now i’ll keep with that.

as you can see the floating sensation continues, i don’t know how to change it by now ;b.

Perhaps move the light to shine from the front, so the shadow will be behind the pen, and use the backlight as that – a backlight. Maybe try adding Ambient Occlusion to add a contact shadow between the pen and the surface. In the properties World tab, you need to check the box for AO. If you scroll down a bit, you’ll see a box for Gather. You have two options, use Raytrace AO or Approximate AO. Should you use Raytrace, the number of samples determines the quality of the pass. It will bump up your render time (not by much with your scene I would imagine), but will hopefully get rid of that nasty floating sensation:)

Thank your for the hint, ozy very useful ;). After a lot of rendering tests i decided to stick with this settings and here’s the result (lot better in my point of view =D)

Looks sweet, good job!!!

Well, i don’t really know what to do, i can’t see the details cuz i can’t separate my actual pen (the reference) to see it’s detail, so i think its done although its looking bad, thx for the support ;b.

ps: hey guys, some of u think my name is something ugly and stuff, and im sorry about that, that was not my intention :(, i was just trying to make something different from the ordinary names i pick…
