I’m looking at developing a system to help organize files and folders on a computer, and want some information on what people think about the current system and what they have. So if you have a few minutes to spare, I’d appreciate it if you could do this questionare.
This probably won’t be helpful but I feel the need to post it anyways. I absolutely hate when an OS or computer program tries to think for the user. If a person is going to use a computer they should make the effort to learn the basics of how it works. Then they can organize their files and folder themselves
I have photos, old blender files, e-books and a host of new software. I use several programs to access my files - caliber and the windows 7 are probably the ones I use daily.
@jetsmart:
I agree, I dislike windows’s ‘libraries’ systems, as it tries to make all files be either music, images or ‘documents.’ What then is a blend file? Image?? Not until it’s rendered. Even Nautilus falls into this trap, I’d rather no software made it’s own folders, but that’s life.
I’m looking at doing a project-based system, where you can give folders tags, and then when a project is completed, it is sent to an invisible archive, where you can find it by searching through it’s tags and it’s contents. It will still allow people to sort folders and files however they like, but just offer a way to clean up old projects while still having them accessible easily.
The data from the survey is supporting this quite well, as most people sort things by project, and place little importance on past projects (the average is 2)
I couldnt figure out what to click on on the survey so i will list it here.
I use a computer at work and at home… work is mainly blender stuff. home is blender very rarely but i use it alot for websurfing / gaming / emails et.etc.
at home, i dont have a very good filing system for anything apart from tv shows, which i use sickbeard to manage (which does an awesome job at)
at work… on each artists computer, they can do what they want… but if they are working on a project, we all work off a server… On this server we have a very good folder structure… we have
Projects
— 1_projname
--------1_assets
--------2_project
--------3_renders
--------4_deliveries
— 2_projname
--------1_assets
--------2_project
--------3_renders
--------4_deliveries
etc.etc.
each project has a number prefixing it so that its all in sequential order…
Each blender file name is
projname-whatitis_v###.blend
so if the project was durian and its the animation version 40 it would be
durian-anim_v040.blend
or if it was a bridge it woudl be
bridge-model_v311.blend
etc.etc.
Pretty much NEVER use the word final in a file name, and never use the word Latest…always assume that the file will be updated at a later stage.
That was really interesting. Thanks doublebishop

I totally agree!
