A Realistic Buzz Lightyear [Updates!]

“You actually think you’re the Buzz Lightyear? Hey, look, everybody! It’s the real Buzz Lightyear!”

Ok so at 19 years old I have been waiting for Toy Story 3 for almost my whole life, and I must say it did not dissapoint. So, after finally seeing the brilliance of Pixar, a few days later I stumbled onto a fantastic piece of work by Raoni Nery over at CGSociety.

Of course I had to get me a piece of that! So here is my intital model for a realistic Buzz Lightyear. Firstly, I know that the face and hood is pretty crap, and probably needs a complete overhaul. However I am pretty pleased with the rest of the armour. Next up I shall be starting to work on the textures, and the beginnings of a full UV Unwrap, gunna be fun!

Any and all crits would be most welcome. Large Images ahead!

5*'s - look forward to the textured item.

Thanks Kbot, I think thats the first time I’ve ever had someone say 5*s on my work :o
Anywho because I’m lazy and putting off tackling the mamoth task of actually texturing fully, I thought I’d start off by applying all the placeholder materials, plus a VERY quick UV Map on the face. As I said, all of these textures are just placeholder, I just wanted to see what it would look like in full colour. Crits are of course appreciated in any aspect.

Thanks.

Updates have been slow, but I’m pretty happy with the results of my face maps. I will still be going back to it, and erasing the eyebrows to make them with particles. Also with particles I will be adding eyelashes and abit of stubble. I’m only on the first layer of textures, what I like to call the “clean run”. So all of the dents, scratchs, rust, and general wear n tear etc will come afterwards. I’m not happy with my Star Command logo and am probably going to go back and redo that. The chest plate is very much a work in progress at the moment, but I wanted to post up an update of how its going. Everything is still very manipulatable at the moment, so if anyone has any comments or suggestions on anything I would be very glad to hear them. Thanks.

Mike

Hey guys there should hopefully be an update tonight, but im just alittle gutted that I havn’t had more replies on this, and could really use some crits/comments.

Thanks

Im surprised you dont have that many comments.
For a start I love the concept of making a more human like character of buzz so good job on that.
As far as modelling goes you have done seriously good job, love the detail and the proportions are all good.

2 crits though)

  1. His face looks a little creepy, maybe try something closer to what buzz looks like but without actually making him look like a cartoon.
  2. Im sure you will get round to this but Id love to see some weathering and scratches on his armour, that would just look badass if you ask me.

Other than that its a 1st rate job.

Well done

Thanks PorkFist. I agree with you completely on the face, it was one of the first comments I got off my missus was “his face looks creepy” so I’ll go back and sort that out at some point. And I will definitely be adding scatchs and weathering to all the armour. Once I have everything the way I want it I will be going back and adding a whole new UV layer to everything with scratches etc. Updates will be coming up later today!
Thanks.

Mike

In terms of the face, you might try looking at actors who you think might get cast as a Buzz-like character in a live action film. In my head, I can see Armageddon-era Bruce Willis, or a Top-Gun-era Tom Cruise. You can, of course, pick whoever you’d like, or just look at a bunch of photos of movie pilots and astronauts and go for a composite. Depending on how far you want to take the realism thing, you could check out NASA astronaut photos instead (less movie-star, more real-life). It might help the creepiness to go for a specific set of features, though, whatever references you choose to use.

Thanks Alterscape I really hadn’t thought of that, thats a great idea. I pretty much just used generic face proportions. Will definitely be coming back to that soon. For the moment I’ve pretty much finished a first texure pass, with just a few exceptions. A friend of mine pointed out that I havn’t got the flashy wing tips, and I’m also going to redo the Star Command Logo which I havnt done yet. I also need to map the logo onto his left arm and do the “Lightyear” stripe on his chest. However, once that’s done that will be what I would consider factory new, as if he were stepping out on his first mission. Then I shall do the dirt and grime layers, then finally come back to the face. Anywho below are the images, crit away! Btw they are pretty massive images so I could get a detailed render.

Personally I think using Tim Allen as a reference for his face would be good choice as he is the voice of Buzz.

You’re saying that Tim Allen’s voice sounds like Buzz’ face ? lol

I agree with the previous posts about the face; better to make it more cartoonish

Good luck with that

Looking very nice :D.
The face is already looking less creepy so good start on that.
The wings could be a little wider at the base althought it isnt important.
Other than that its looking very good, will keep an eye on this project :).

Ok I finally have an update. I have finished redoing the logo, both on the chest and the arm. I have also added the Lightyear strip on the chest and tweaked some textures. This is pretty much my clean run version finished. Next step will be dirt and griming up the model with mud, scratchs, weathering etc, which I have already started on the Lightyear logo. However, what with University starting again this week updates may be few and far between, I just hope that I will have time to get to work on this. As always crits are welcomed and appreciated.

Thanks

Warning: Huge Image Ahead!

Good so far but I’d really like to see the grunge factor upped. Just to contrast the origional pristine toy, a grungy suit (not dirty, just realistic materials) would be nice. But very good so far. Will be excited to see the finished product no matter which route you decide to take.

Hey blenderartists long time no see! Finally got around to actually updating this. As with my last project this isnt dead, just been on hold for a while, I was planning on coming back to it over christmas however the birth of my firstborn son took priority. As for an update, I have finally got around to remodelling the head and re-doing the eyes, although I know they still need some work. Hopefully soonish I should be able to start on a full grime texture and really make Buzz come to life. Crits are welcome on any aspect whatsoever, both modelling and texturing. Also, ideas for a full comp would be nice, right now I’m planning on 3 big images for this model, the first being Buzz in an action pose shooting his laser, although I need ideas for the background. Second is with wings fully extended flying through the sky with To Infinity & Beyond! written to the side, and the third being a beauty pass on a pedestal. Ideas, Crits?

N.B: To see the full sized huge image right click > View Image and then zoom in!

Where’s the Star Command decal on the side of the arm?

It’s there you just can’t see it on that pic because of the angle. I do still need to work on that however. Any other crits?

Oh, ok. It just that I seen it so many times, the decal is one of the most remembered part of the toy. He does look like he been through some rough missions.

Yeah definately! The next stage of this is going to be to rough him up, dent the armour, muddy it up, add scratchs, weathering, burn marks etc. What do you think of the face texture?

The mouth looks too thin, and the eyes are too bright. Also, the legs might be a little too thin too, but that might be the pose and/or black on black.
Other than that, it looks great. I definitely want to see more poses!
