A sad guy

I’m feeling kinda down lately for several reasons. Actually, it’s some kind of a “I just can’t believe it”-mood, so I modeled this little guy who expresses my inside pretty well. Hope you like it.

Don’t be scared of critics, guys

I like! I like!

Nico -

Hmmm. Critiques. Well, I’ll be the first to admit that I am new to the 3D thing - so this is kind of hard for me, plus it’s hard because I really like the piece.

The things I like: I like the shape of the model, especially the hands. I like the rendering on the hands too - especially the “outline” look. The lighting seems appropriate as well.

The only two things that come to mind are:

  1. The eyes. I don’t know what it is, but … hmm. I don’t know. Maybe a little bigger? I’m not sure. I wonder if there would be some way to better convey the idea that the eyes are looking down?

  2. The DOF. Right now it is on the hands, which like I said I think are super cool, but I wonder if the focus was more towards the feet if it would draw the eyes to the bottom of the piece (instead of the center) and help convery the head-down, depressed feel? Just an idea.

Now that the critique is over…

Nice little character (yea I know I needed a reply that was nice… ;))
Is this built for animating? (rigged and posed) %|
The shadow on the ground seems a little too strong (but you probably ment it that way)
also knees might be a little blocky.
But overall a great piece, nice lonly cartoon like feel to it.

really great piece man.

some things,

the shadow on the arm could need some more samples…or something, it look kidna weird

and he seem to have a smile with that mouth…no? but the pose is kweel

Keep it up man!

Cool work Nico. Reminds me of these two characters. Click 2 view.

Animation in the pipeline?

Sonix.

Funny how different people can see different things. It totally looks like a sigh to me.

I like this. I can relate, as I have been down as of late myself. Being creative helps, as I know. I hope making and sharing this guy has helped you.

Hope you feel better.

Sorry, he doesn’t look sad. He looks like he’s all wound up and ready to jump out and strangle someone (open mouth and outstretched fingers) He looks more like a frustrated character than a sad character, sorry.

I don’t have a problem with the work itself, I think it’s great, but it just doesn’t convey the emotions you want it to convey. Make his head lean forward and put his hands on his forehead and it will look more like a sad character. The glassy look in the eye is good, that looks sad. I hope I didn’t sound too harsh. Great character design though.

It’s sad, you feel like this :-? Isn’t that the beginning of the fall? In any case. Image is nice. Fine lighting, smooth material. Is it Blender with Blinn?

(IMHO I think, most of prev crits are dull, because your picture isn’t about photo-realism, but about mood and feelings. If you are satisfied with its overall look, it’s OK and done… No?)

Cool pic Nico. Great smooth modeling, materials, lightning and the use of z Blur (I’m right?) But the guy doesn’t really look he’s sad, it’s more the scene which made the character feeling sad. I think a animation should also awesome, I like that character. 8)

Thanks for C&C, guys. I agree that ‘sad’ is not the correct term for neither the expression on the picture nor my mood, so the title was just not very precise.

I also like the hands.

I’m sure it’s just me, but It took me a moment to realize he was against a “wall”. The very dark shadow cast on the wall made me initially think the little guy was crawling out of a whole.

hey man nice render  I like the soft look to the spot…

PS: keep it up 8)

Cool update, Now the character feels more alone in the dark, sadly and banned from the world outside that place.

He’s got a lot of personality. I’d love to see him moving. You might be able to communicate that feeling you have a little better with a little movement. Just a thought.

Hey, I love him … he’s become my new wallpaper but he’s really pixellated, any chance you could post a bigger version ?

Serialsiner.

That’s great man… for me that’s part of what’s art is about, expressing a feeling in a different way… i wonder if giving him eyebrows would emphasize the ‘can’t-believe!’-feeling :expressionless: ?

fantastic!

I think I can sympathise, nico - I’ve been feeling a bit the same way lately. To me, the character doesn’t look so ‘sad’, but more isolated, detached, scared and despairing, reaching out for something to hold on to.

Why are you making this image? Is it to win modelling and texturing prizes and make a piece of work for your portfolio? Or is it because you want to let out your emotions and express a feeling in images that is hard to express with words? If it’s the latter, than I agree with Union S8. You don’t need crits, it’s done, and just move on.

Btw, they reason you was searching the web for a walk cycle tute, is that because you want to animate him?
