A Slightly Different Chess Render **UPDATED IMAGE**

I have wanted to do a chess render for a long time as I’m a big chess fan. However I am not a fan of cliche renders. And since just about everyone ever has done a chess board, I wanted to do something unique.

I wish I could claim credit for the design idea but I can’t. I found a very similar design, and just tweaked it a bit per my own tastes.

Rendered with Cycles.

v3ry n1ce!!

excellent typography/model concept

Now 3D print those and use them as actual pieces. Great job, just I don’t find this to be a very realistic positioning of the pieces, unless these people are terrible at chess.

And it looks like black’s getting his ass whooped.

I actually took the position from a famous chess game. This was the last move, at which point White forfeited. And I’m totally going to 3d print them as soon as I find the best price to do it.

Oh, I was looking at it from the wrong angle, and I found it weird that the white king was almost at the end of the board. facepalm Should have noticed the orientation of the clock. facepalmx2

I tweaked some materials and lighting, and added a few subtle background elements.

Does this come in 1440x900 size? I’m a huge chess enthusiast and I LOVE this take on the theme. I would like to use this as a wallpaper.

I can always render one at that size. I’ll render it out in a bit and post a link to the full size.

that’d be nice!

You can download the full 1440x900 pic here.

thanks josh - great job.

Oh, that is beautiful. It’s a shame that you hadn’t done this earlier, and had a chance to print it. This would have been the perfect present :frowning:

Very nice. I made the same mistake in viewpoint that @Animaniac888 made with the original image. The chair in the updated image makes a world of difference in seeing the viewpoint correctly. With the fairly even distribution of pieces, its hard to tell which side is which, even with the timer device where it is.

Besides the fact, that it is one of the most original ideas I have seen in some time, HOW did you model the figures? It must have taken forever

The originality of the piece is brilliant. I love the composition and lighting.

I never did post up the FINAL image for this one, and since it’s found some new interest, here it is for all to enjoy. I tweaked the materials and lighting for the finished image to give it a little more realism I think.

Also, for those who are interested, the chess pieces are actually curves that were then extruded and beveled. And yes, it took forever.

I’ll say it again…Brilliant!
