I am familiar with the knife tool, but is it possible to use it by selecting two vertices instead of using the freehand tool? I am trying to make building structures and would like to make precise and parallel cuts, for doors/windows/etc. Help is appreciated!
By the way, I know that selecting the vertices and pressing F doesn’t work, because it only adds an edge and doesn’t actually cut any faces, nor does it create vertices at the edges it intercepts.

Are they planning on ever supporting it in 2.5? Until then its back to 2.49 for me (because I’ve heard of similar functionality being supported in that release).
when i got 2.49 i was unable to use the knife tool
bug in video driver or blender
so i found other ways of doing it
now in 2.5 it is working fine
but not yet using it very often !LOL
you can always select and edge and cut it in n parts
you could also remove the face before subdividing!
and if at angle it can also be done!

While reading this thread it hit me. The work around is simple. Since there is no snapping to vertex for knife tool in 2.58, just cut the edge near by and merge the vertices to where you wanted to snap. End result is one cut, one vertex.
