Abandoned Lighthouse

This was my submission for a Weekly CG Challenge. The theme was “Abandoned House”. Everything in the scene was created using Blender and was rendered with cycles.

Please give me criticism! I am really trying to improve my works.




First off, if you can afford more polygons, please do so (as I think I can actually see some of the triangles in the rock). If you can make use of the new Micropoly displacement in Cycles, then do it.

The glass needs to make more aggressive use of smooth shading (check the triangles around the cracks).

It might be having too much of the lighting from the front (or overly aggressive contrast adjustment and sharpening), but whatever you did is making it look a little like a 2D cutout (as opposed to the nice 3D effect in the clay image).

I think you had your .jpg compression settings a bit too high when saving the image (major artifacts in the background).

Anyway, I am thinking that it expresses quite good on the subject “abandoned”, good work.

I like how your modeling and texturing turned out but I think the scene could benefit from more dramatic lighting it seems to flat in its current state. You did capture the abandoned run down look nicely but maybe some more action in the scene with this scene in particular the first thing I imagined was a storm on the ocean with a giant wave crashing against the back of the rock or something like that.

It looks terrific, apart from the scale of the waves. The water turns it from a realistic scene into a diorama.

I would decrease the size of the ivys. Thats some huge effin leafs if you compare to a person Walking through those doors. Good model otherwise, keep it up bro.

Your right, next time I will use a human base mesh to compare things to. Thanks for your feedback!

An easy way is to set the units to meters and scale a cube to about 1,85 cm. An average person. And just build around that. Cheers man.

One more feedback on the design: the bricks in the lighthouse walls seem to be perfectly aligned on top of each other. I think if you make them interlock like on the bottom part of the house, it will look more realistic.
Otherwise cool look!
