About bumping old threads... what are the 'unspoken rules'?

For example, I forgot about this thread
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81344
and saw it again a few months later. I still have things to say on this topic – and it seems like I was ignoring the people who replied to the thread. So how old is this thread considered? And would it be bad to bump it?

Well, you’re the original poster of the thread, and it’s just over three months old (I think the limit has been established as no older than four months). I say, bump away…

well, i just drafted a major section of the wiki on using VSE. I took the most FAQ first and answered them by writing up those sections. I also re-remembered and re-learned some things about Blender. So, I went back thru my old subscriptions and picked out those threads where I felt I had left them hanging or loose ended, and bumped them with the new info.

So it may have been months, but I do NOT want people thinking “Oh yeah, I asked if blender could do X and such, but no one really told me how.” and go on thinking that forever, especially if it is because we just couldnt think of it at the time they asked.

I will also occasionally look back at a forum and look for 0 replies and take them on as a challenge, even thou originally i never answered because it was not my area of expertise. So, i may end up bumping a thread a few weeks old just to answer it, cause I know how I would feel if no one even bothered to reply.

I think we also need to keep in mind sometimes how RAPIDLY these threads come, and as our user base expands, many more Q will ask and thus bury a question that was just asked at the wrong time.

It’ll only be locked if it’s bumped to tag some useless information to it. The poster may well be sincere about his late post but if his answer is “Use Alt-B” the info is still useless if the original question was posted before v 2.40.

In OT and News & Chat forums, since one can’t add anything useful to a dead topic, if it can reasonably be said to have died then it will be killed if bumped. Exceptions are “What do you look like” and “where are you from’” type threads.

Anytime you think a topic you posted to has been unfairly locked you can always contact a mod (don’t waste the admins’ time) and state your case. The intent of locking is to eliminate miss Chiff and her buddies and not to stifle input.

Thanks for the info. That makes it a lot more clear:yes: . Now… time to bump;) !

Should BlenderArtists automatically lock threads that aren’t used for six months? This is how CGTalk gets around people bringing dead threads back to life…

I’m not too sure that would be a good idea. Sometimes dead threads get bumped by someone who adds useful information to it, and the thread is given another life = )

automatically locked threads is already reality

Yes, but the range is kind of broad. What do you have it set for, a year?

well, even if it shows under my nick, I am not currently in staff, but as I remember Timothy set it to one year, but I don’t think it is automatically now when I look for older locked posts, it looks as if were done manually, but about 18th of november 2005 and older threads.
