About the video sequencer/editor

There’s one big thing that is holding me and probably most video editors back from ever using it in a serious fashion; A solution to organize your project.

Having the ability to create bins, duplicating timelines, store assets, preview footage before inserting, setting in/out points before inserting it, nesting clips, etc.

Most edit and trimming tools seem to be there, and i would love to give it a chance. I mean, it is blender. but not having the ability to organize a project is just a dealbreaker.

Or is there a different way of dealing with this?

Blender’s video editor was never intended to be a serious video editor. It’s more of a convenience tool for basic sequencing tasks. Some of those features you are asking about, like clip bins, and footage preview, are not likely to be implemented anytime soon.

That said, it does actually have clip nesting! In blender this is called a “meta-strip” and you can create one by selecting strips and hitting Ctrl + G to group them. You can also create different scenes, and the sequence of one scene can contain the sequence of the other if you like.

interesting, that already makes up for alot of stuff.

Its just a shame… I feel like blender has the potential to take on the big ones in edit land, with all its functionalities in its core. This previewing/organize ability is just the only thing keeping it from competing. The playback performance seem to be good, the trim tools are there, the customizability is outstanding, there are plenty of addons, etc. I have worked as a full time editor/compositor for 10 years now, working with avid, resolve, premiere, lightworks, FCP, pretty much the whole bunch. Almost everyone i talk to has sort of enough of the current commercialized NLE’s. you are often being forced in a specific workflow after a bunch of ‘‘updates’’.

Imagine building a space ship, only to use it inside the atmosphere!
Blender has great cards to play with, and the market is only getting bigger.

That’s the nicest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say about Blender’s VSE playback performance

Really? Just tested it again and its handling 4k DNxHR files quite okay! Not the best, but i’ve seen way worse

Video editing is supported but it’s not Blender’s strong suit. But there are many excellent video editors out there, both open source and paid. (I use Final Cut Pro.)

You’re going to spend a lot of time “in the editing room” as you put any film together, so it’s very important that you become very familiar with your tool-of-choice so that you can use it fluently.
