I use bitmap font builder (google it) to transform my fonts into .tga but the background is not transparent.
How do I make the background transparent (alpha) in photoshop CS5?

I would check the channels panel to see if there is indeed an alpha channel in the file. Sometimes there is an alpha channel even though the image doesn’t have visible transparency. If the alpha channel is there, you can do “alpha to selection” (I think that might be under the select menu, but not sure…I replaced Photoshop with Gimp years ago). With that selection made you can delete the visible background, or copy&paste the selection into a new layer and delete the background layer.
