add glossiness to a certain area in blender?

Say I have a matt materiel on a model and I want to make a worn or rubbed spot that is glossy. is there a way?

Sure, you need to create a mask first (black and white where white would be the gloss), then asign the new texture to the material, and set the influence to affect the specular.

Yeah I know that, I mean with reflections and everything. Sorry I didn’t clarify.

You can affect quite a few shader parameters using such a mask, including Mirror & RayMirror, in the Shading section of Influence.
