Addicting Lighting (a macro cycles shot)

The scene I’ve been building to play about with cycles a bit. I’d love critiques, but it isn’t really serious enough to go in the critique forum.

To give a sense of scale, the syringes are each about 6/8ths of an inch wide.

I am more or less happy with the composition and the modeling, but I feel iffy about the materials. The luminescent liquid in particular. It is so, so flat looking. It either needs sparkely ‘stars’ in it, or fresnel shading, or I don’t know what yet. Something.

I’m also thinking the syringes don’t look quite right. Can’t decide if the plastic needs to be more cloudy/milky, or if it just needs a slight hue to it. They also need markings to indicate the volume drawn in, but those will probably be their own mesh.

Something I have been wondering, is there a good way to make a linked clone of a mesh? I’d rather not have to reduplicate the ‘master’ syringe mesh through out the scene each time I modify it.

You make linked duplicates with Alt-D. The syringes need air bubbles

I’m not so sure about the air bubbles. Injecting a solution into a person (at least into someone’s bloodstream) with air bubbles can be dangerous and cause clotting. What would make it feel more right to me would be making the syringes more transparent and adding the glow to the liquid inside.

Maybe is because where I live, but i’ve never seen an square syringe before.
Maybe a little more of ambient light and a little less of DOF help, and make the bokeh hexagonal, not many cameras have pentagonal bokehs

“Not many cameras have pentagonal bokehs” So what you’re saying is that this image has a unique quality to it? And you want Keifer to use a more common lens, so that it looks more like every other photo ever taken?

Keifer, for the liquid, might it be possible in cycles to have an emissive material thats invisable? That way you can duplicate the fluid mesh, have one as the invisible but emissive material, and the other can be the material of your choosing, maybe a translucent material, or what ever you think looks right?.

For the measurement markings. You could just use a mask to combine the plastic and diffuse material. Use the same mask as a bump map and your golden.

Well, I prefer hex bokeh over pent bokeh

Huzzah! Thank you!

I prefer five blades, but cycles doesn’t support giving the blades curvature, so I’ve switched it over to eight.

If anyone else is reading this and looking for how to do this, it turns out that you can toggle an object’s visilbity to different sorts of rays via [properties]->[object]->[ray visibility]

I’ll have to play with that a bit more to get it to do what I want, I think.

I think it’s gorgeous to be honest. The square syringes are odd, but it’s obviously done for style. The luminescence liquid looks fantastic, much better results than I ever get tinkering around with emissive materials.

A new attempt at a material for the liquid. I like it, but it turned out dimmer than I had anticipated. Fixing that now.

Now with a cleaner composition!

Thinking about trying my hand at a procedural cork material for the jar stoppers.
