Adding an Edge to a Plane using J won't work

Hello everyone,

I have a problem where i am trying to add an edge to a plane by selecting two verticles and pressing J.
This adds an edge but it isn’t cutting the plane itself.

It will only go the shortest path. With the extra vertex there on the edge, and that edge having an angle, the tool isn’t able to cut the plane. You could join the verticies, but you will still have to use the knife tool to cut your edge.
