Adding bones to rigify and skinning

I have a character with a rigify rig in it. I have added bones to control extra parts. How do I add these to the mesh. They are children of the rigify rig. When I rotate a rigify control, the bones I created move with the rig. When I try to assign rig ro mesh, these bones are left out. Thanks.
