Does anybody have any tips for getting proper tablet support (wacom intuos) in Gimp/Inkscape for OS X (Panther)? I can get the tablet to respond the same as a mouse, but no pressure/tilt sensitivity. And if I go to Input devices for either of those Apps, It tells me there are no extended input devices on the system.
I know the table works properly in OS X because the Photoshop elements that came bundled with it behaves as expected.
The system is up to date, and is running 10.3.9 on iMac G5. X11 1.0 (xfree86 4.3.0) - the default that shipped with the panther install discs. I have the developer tools installed as well.
X11 has no pressure sensitivity support, but there are a few workarounds. You can try running Seashore (a project to port Gimp to OS X’s native Cocoa) under OS X, but has a very limited amount of features (basse aptly named it “horse shit” during the production of Elephants Dream). Or you could try CinePaint, which runs natively in OS X. As for Inskcape, GTK for OS X is currently being ported natively, but may take a while to be in a release.
Or of course, you could just use Photoshop Elements as it came with your mac.
PS elements has no channel data (alpha channel), so it’s useless in real design work. I guess I’ll put the tablet on one of my other machines. cinepaint still sucks.
