Advice on achieving texture/ art style in Blender

Hello friends Im really struggling to understand the process of texturing in Blender. While I see you can place an image on a model and scale it, sometimes it says missing textures even though I added one and unwrapped/ or it says I cant paint directly on the model. I know I’m doing something wrong in the setup. Any advice would be a tremendous help! I really want to evolve my Blender assets to a semi realistic style.
Below is my games current assets which use basic materials in Blender. The goal texture is based off of Warband.

If theres any tutorials for the latest Blender that really cleanly break down the process making a similar texture/ style and applying it to your asset that would be amazing as well! Thanks so much take care.

Hi Jake, it seems that you know about unwrapping and creating textures.
Maybe you have not setup your model’s material to actually use the image texture you’ve created. In that case you get the “Missing Textures” warning when trying to paint directly on the model.

Here’s a Texture painting beginner’s guide. It’s for Blender 4.0.1 but it shouldn’t matter. In 4.5 we might have more options when UV unwrapping, but for getting started with texture painting it’s good.
