Advice on modelling thin objects (leaf, petal, grass, etc)

Hey there. What is the best way to go about modelling a thin object like a leaf or a flower petal?

Should it be a 2D planar object? Problem here is that any textures would show on both sides of the face which is, in most cases, not what you want.

Should it be a (very thin) 3D object?) This is a pain to rig (or maybe I am not doing it right?).
