Advice on "Should I buy a new computer?"

Hi, I am Aryan.

My PC has following specs:

  1. List item
  2. 15 years old.
  3. 2 GB ram.
  4. No graphics card.
  5. Intel G33 dual core.
  6. 32 bit.
  7. Opengl 1.4.
  8. Runs Blender 2.76.

Blender crashes during rendering and very slow.
Can’t sculpt.
Can’t update to latest blender version.
I am a beginner and have done a few works and I intend to work on Blender and CG in the future (I am 15).

Please give advice if I should buy a new PC, if so what are the specs.

Thanking you in advance.

I think you SHOULD buy a new one / or if it is upgrdeable, upgrade it with the following:
1 A graphics Card really helps ( A good Nvidia card )
2 A better CPU helps too ( Intel i7 or i9 )
3 You should also use blender 2.82 / 2.83
4 Ram will help if it is above 16gb

In my opinion, you definitely should. I am sure any other computer work is also hard to do on such an old computer. Maybe even web browsing is a bit slow. I think it is time to update to something much newer.
Now, I am not saying you have to go and spend many thousands of dollars to get a computer. Even something below $1000 is way better than what you have. Plus, you are only beginning with Blender. Upgrading can be done later if some things turn out to be not good enough.

I am not sure whether you are planning on building a computer or just buying a pre-built one. Building it yourself could potentially make it cheaper and allow you to get the parts you want, but with the added complexity of having to source individual parts and setting it all up. It’s fine with going either way, but for Blender work you will need to make sure that you get a computer with a decent graphics card. This would be what you can use to render all your scenes in Blender. It would be the main factor in speed of rendering if you are doing GPU rendering, which is potentially multiple times faster than what you could do with a CPU. So, spend a bit of money there as it is really worth it.

As for RAM, you are definitely currently lacking. 8GB is a fine amount for computers nowadays. I use 8GB currently and it has worked fine for my Blender work. Of course, 16GB is even better, but not what you are looking for if you have a lower budget.

A CPU is also pretty important, however not the most if you are going with GPU rendering. I haven’t got any recommendations here. Maybe check some of the benchmarks to decide on what you want.

Also, I wouldn’t recommend trying to update the computer you have. It is way too old. Parts that are compatible with it may be hard to find. 32 bit is a limitation, your RAM is probably DDR 2 or something, and there may not be a PCIe slot for a graphics card (or if there is, it’s a very old version of it). Trying to replace things would end up in replacing everything to get a decent computer to catch up with current computers making there no point to do so - building from scratch with a new motherboard would be a better way.

You should upgrade.

What is your budget?

What is your budget? I have a 2014 macbook pro (that cost a lot of money in 2014) that runs blender mostly fine. I also have a 2018 windows gaming laptop that cost under $800 that renders my blender cycles scenes 3x faster.

You should definitely upgrade.

Even if you upgraded to a mid-tier gaming PC from five years ago it would likely be a significant upgrade for you. Even more so if you went for a mid-tier gaming PC from now.

In terms of new parts it might cost you around $800, bought used - you might get it at around $400 to $500.
