Advice on Unwrapping

Hi,

so i have been trying for some hours and have been searched alot on how to unwrap but i still don’t get it, i’m not sure when to put a seam or where, for example on this model i made

So as you see, i’m not sure how to properly unwrap and know where to put seams
any advice on how to unwrap would be very appreciated, and if you could explain why i should do that you tell me so i understand better

I would’ve uploaded a picture of the unwrap, but i couldn’t because i can only upload 3 pictures per post

There’s no one right way to do it. A good place to start is with a checkerboard pattern and a default unwrap. Particularly notice places where the checkerboard comes away looking very distorted. Then add some seams and try again.

For instance, I can readily see that the finger-grips will need to be seamed and unwrapped separately, because there’s simply no way that an unwrap appropriate to the tubular body of the syringe is gonna look good.

I can also fairly predict that the cone-shaped section where the syringe narrows down to the needle-mount is going to need to be unwrapped separately, simply because this part of the shape does contract in diameter so much, in so little distance. The top of the piston will be the same.

Other separate maps might be needed for areas where you intend to use separate textures, e.g. the needle mount or the ring that the finger-grips plug into.

Like I said, the checkerboard test-pattern can be your best friend. A texture’s coordinate system is square and flat, so a checkerboard should map smoothly upon it without distortion.

imagine your object was made of slightly stretchy paper and the trick is to make cuts ( seams ) in a way that you could lay it out somewhat flat.

Thanks that is actually a pretty cool idea

Thank you very much for giving me a good explanation and how i can do things better
