Looks like Blender has a problem, because they abolished the built in game engine completely. So Blender artists were more or less shifting to rendering. Using some W.I.P. new external game engine is a challenge for most artists as they require more or less coding skills and suffer often from development stalling over longer periods of time. UpBGE offers no built-in web-target, which i find more and more important and safer than running an executable locally. Armory3d has web target, but the latest versions seem to be full of bugs. Forcing you to revert to older version to avoid tripping too often. And Godot wants scripts for the logic, which have to be written in concerto with your artistic intentions. Not really ideal for most artists. And rendered images? AI image come closer and closer in a way that artists have a problem to get their time paid off they have invested. The only people which are not suffering are skilled real time creators which know how to use AI to keep repetitive work to a minimum. Not ideal for the average Blender head.
BGE was removed for a very good reason, it was impossible for it to compete with other engines.
There are tons of movies, series and professional video content that is done on blender, but are there any equivalent to video games made with BGE ?
Coding skills is indeed very needed to develop a game from what I understand. So what you’re stating is that people without the needed skills can use a game engine far below any competitors to stay relevant compared to people using blender, which is considered as a good alternative to all the standard DCC…
As for the use of AI , it might save some time in some places but I’ve yet to see studios that could produce quality content without artists. It looks shiny on the outside but I think it’s hard to use on a bigger scale except for some specific use cases.
Anyway, you have the right to have your opinions but I don’t see how any of this would work in my reality …
Dawg you dropped this hot take 2 hours after the Chat GPT Astra 6 launch video dropped, where they name Blender explicitly and show it in MCP workflows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QNsdr-Qx_I
The REAL questions:
–is Blenderwashing a thing? On one hand it shows a huge milestone for ubiquity and adoption (called out by name, the only software they did that for) but could be that they’re using Blender’s clout in software as an ethical framework and good-hearted community project to fix AI’s brand issues.
–How come the 3D printed rocket looks different than the model on screen?
–What even is “beef and rice”? That’s not a culture or flavor of dish, that’s 2 ingredients.
This is complete nonsense
This is the most kitch video I’ve seen in a while
too bad they skipped the part where the guy asks : " can you play my game ? I’d like to eat and I don’t have input devices anyway…"
It’s weird that with all the money they have they can’t make a good marketing video. I’m curious is that’s only me that finds it ridiculous or I’m missing something…
I can sum up that by " useless people doing useless stuff alone in a big room"…
For me it’s pure crap. Anyway.. commenting the “promo”: the biggest difference between 1979 - 2026 is that in 1979 people had realistic expectations, computers only did what you asked them to do and people were more relaxed and not frantic about.. nothing.. while they are asking every kind of silly things speaking to a dumb algorithm ![]()
This didn’t impact anyone really. People who used BGE just went to the new forks that continued development, or switched engines entirely. I sincerely doubt a significant, if any number of people abandoned their game development dreams and started rendering stills or animations if they were interested in gamedev before.
Game logic and patterns are game logic and patterns. The engine doesn’t matter that much, if it does, its a bad engine. Switching engines is annoying, but it won’t deter anyone who really wants to make games.
Development stalls for numerous reasons. If it stalls because of an engine switch, that’s on the developers of that individual game for not staying on their engine/version for the duration of the development, its not the Blender Foundations fault someone decided to jump ship on functioning software just because they stopped supporting it. We could all go redownload 2.79 and make some new games in old BGE. 2.79 still exists.
Lacking good web build ability is a fair criticism of an engine these days, particularly if someone does a lot of game jams.
Every developer should know not to update their engine mid project. Try out the new stuff with smaller unimportant things if you want, but always wait for a stable LTS for a serious project, and stay on it for the duration. This goes for all engines, not just BGE forks. This is pretty standard practice for modelers and animators on film too. New software usually has some bugs and can break workflows, especially if those workflows rely on addons.
Getting into scripting and coding is hard, but unavoidable if one wants to script and code a game. You still had/have to learn all that stuff in BGE even if the visual scripting blocks were a tad friendlier. All that stuff learned in BGE transfers over to other engines though.
this sentence is kind of gibberish, but it is the first part of your paragraph that seems relevant to the thesis statement in the title.
I don’t use AI at all, and I am not suffering? Nor is anyone I’ve spoken to in gamedev and 3d art who don’t use AI. We continue to make art with tools, rather than pump out slop with prompts, because we love the process of creating art.
Worse, it’s a narrative/ideology.
The narrative that LLMs can read your mind better than those pesky programmers, because AI make better decisions.
The assumption that “repetitive tasks” (basically, anything manual) can be categorically removed from the decision process, eg.
- The Intent (I’m going to hate this word) = “make a 3D rocket”
- The Repetitive Tasks = open Blender > add a cylinder > extrude > etc…
With the grand presumption that the ask has been asked before.
It can be useful, just as fast food can be useful.
<irony>
Maybe some LLM can help to remove this repetitive tasks of reading the statements of people who seems to know everything about some product, company or open source project.. but seems do to nothing else than makeing videos about that “problem” and not “better” product..
There is a category for this: “Everything wrong with..” or was it "The end is near.. " ??
</irony>
I don’t see a problem here. Why do you need a game engine in Blender? Why do you need a game engine at all? Just use AI to create games.
It’s the future anyway.

In all seriousness, try it. See who is suffering.
Simply ask to your big screen: "can you draw me a small yellow circle ? " while ordering food and preparing for your tennis lesson ![]()
Got to admit, the yellow circle in MS Paint was impressive. When I have a client with needs like that, I should probably seriously consider subscription. You can probably get a yellow circle of appropriate size in only half a day of prompting these days. That’s groundbreaking. Do you get that wall screen with the subscription? I want that as well.
Ordering a pizza with voice was also worth it all the trillions spent and hardware price crisis. It’s revolutionary. I mean WHAT? You just press a button, tell them what kind of pizza you want and then it arrives at your door? That’s unheard of.
Groundbreaking new way of life.
But in the meanwhile… you also have your yellow circle, don’t forget xD
The word “meanwhile”… makes me think we’re doomed to the following:
- This is yellow

- This is a circle

- And the Tech EmperorBros have beautiful leather jackets on…

As long as everything points to only one engine (i.e. UE5) this is not for me. UE5 is one of a hardware hog. I wait for some more efficient alternatives. In the meantime i use an old version of Armory3D, which you can’t discuss on Blenderartists.org, cause GE’s get suppressed. Off topic? Not really. I experienced too many irrelevant answers, of which some where even hateful.
If you are determined to look for problems everywhere, you will find them.
I get a vibe that you are determined to look for problems only in everything and anything.
Even discussing one problem at a time is not enough. Everything you post will be about multiple problems
Well, it’s up to you.
I don’t know what to say to that. ![]()
Hope you find some solutions as well even though you don’t seem to be looking for them.
That’s an on technical topic, extremely helpful, strictly non-personal answer.
With that lovely demonstration of being a good community member, I think this thread has run its course. Closing.
