Airman and Yafray

I posted a question under my thread here:
https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=97529#97529
…please if someone has any additional information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Landis

Ok…here are some questions…I was posting these on my other thread but I think that the way things are goin’ I am going to have quite a few so I’m movin’ in over here!

Here goes…

  1. What lights in yables light editor do you (anyone reading my plethera of questions) recommend : point light, photon, etc. And why?

  2. What is the deal with the sky light or sun versus the the constant background? (again this is inside of blender still through the yable interface). Does this take the place of a light or do you still need additional lights.

  3. Does the global illumination checkbox in Yafray’s rendering settings add light to the scene or again…do I still need a light source (similar to the question above)?

  4. Is there a way to have yafray display what its rendering in realtime like Blender does? Why? So I can see if I am rendering out a trash image an hour ahead of time :< ! …

  5. Why does it take so long to get a magazine (issue 38 of 3Dworld which contains dotblends yafray tutorial) from the U.K. to the shelf of a book store in the United States? :frowning: Someone needs to make a tutorial for the postal service!

I have more …baby steps…baby steps…

Cheers,
Landis

dons lifejacket and hops into the same boat as landis, wagerly awaiting replies…

Sonix can’t help put pulls up in a bigger boat with fresh water. Waits for any info as Landis has asked all the right questions.

Perhaps a Yafray guru might pop down from his mountain, walk on water and rescue all of us.

Sonix.

lol…awesome…I am sitting here in front of this thing with that pathetic whimper that a dog does from time to time. I would be in the chatbox but I have to download an update first (which is what I am doing now).

  1. No idea
  2. The backgrounds only change the background, like the world in blender, you still need other lights
  3. See #1
  4. No, yafray renders the whole image and then saves it, there’s no way for the GUI to display what it’s rendered so far, it would be a bit hard considering how it does anti-aliasing anyway, just do what I do and render at 100x100 with no OSA, then it only takes 5-10 minutes to render.
Neither this nor proper cancelling of renders will be availiable in the GUI until it’s added into the “real” yafray.
  5. See #3

All this is AFAIK, someone else probably will have better answers…
Or then again maybe not…
Ask at the yafray forums maybe.

hmmm. this sucks. did anyone bring a radio? darn. how are we gunna get out of here? i should have paid more attention to macgyver. i dont even have duct tape. sigh

lol…gfx…lol…thanks for the answers everyone…I posted this twice…the other place is my Airman thread so if anyone comes here for answers that maybe didnt get answered go there…

this had me fooled for ages, using, blender2.27,yalbe & yafray newest version…
(followed the blender2yafray tut, now happily playing with settings, happy happy happy,
http://myeye.homestead.com/files/render.jpg

First…I do not have that gamma slider like you. I installed the latest version of yafray…but I did overwrite the old version…probably a bad idea eh? I did figure out some things though…see my post above about the subsurf for rendering versus display feature. I am actually getting the hang of raytracing…or atleast starting to feel comfortable with it. Here are my results:

http://www.landisfields.com/airman_yafray_005.jpg

As for that gamma option…I also have 2.27…is there a new version of the G.U.I. that I dont know about?

Posted a test render of the Yafray version of the Shitter truck over at my other thread:

Just thought someone passing by might be interested.

Ok I have another question for someone out there…maybe more than one.
Also …when looking at my questions…keep in mind that I use the G.U.I for Yafray…I wouldnt even know where to begin for command line use of the beast…I am sure there are plenty of tutorials though  .

  1. In regards to the backgrounds…if I select image …can I get the same results as with an HDRI file…or atleast similar…basically if I want to use an image to affect the color of my lights and such…is that possible? And …if so…should this image be a spherical version of lets say a panorama…mimicing an HDRI …sort of like a poor mans HDRI?

  2. If I only have one light in my scene …and I check the global illumination…what exactly is that doing…is it taking that light and essentially duplicating it in the form of a light dome…or atleast the values…you know what I am thinking I hope…because I want to know what is happening when I am checking the global illumination box befre I hit render.

Cheers,
Landis

Foreword: never used any GUI for Yafray

YafRay fully implements HDRI illumination! You must have an HDRI probe and that’s all (well, setting up in Yable is ok now, but it is a bit tricky)

Is anyone familiar with the BLENDXML app that is offered on the Yafray website…if so please let me know.

Thanks.

Ok…how about this one…

I use mostly textures that are NOT UV mapped inside of Blender. So…my problem is that I need some way to export the materials from Blender…but convert it to a shader…is there some sort of utility that was developed back in the day for Blenderman when BMRT was big?

Landis
