Alien Specimen Hold

This is my second scene created in Blender. I still find Blender very challenging but absolutely love the journey. This is actually my first scifi scene that I have ever done in any medium. I found that my passion lies with creature and character creation but, I have suddenly become quite fascinated with rooms and indoor spaces and the dramatic complexities they can create. This work was more of a study for me and furthering what I am learning in Blender. I hope whoever views this enjoys it. Be merciful, I haven’t been using Blender for very long so my stuff probably looks a bit rough. Have a great weekend, everybody!

I think this is really good as a first sci-fi scene… very talented. I also think if you rendered the same scene in other render engines you could get even better results than Cycles that’s sort of weak in calculating GI especially for dark scenes. Maybe you can try it with Octane for blender too, that’s free. I’m sure with Octane deep accurate lights you will get something really different…

Thank you so very much you are very kind! It has admittedly been a struggle, to learn how to use Blender (I suspect that my laptop is not entirely the culprit for some of the frustration and battles). Octane is free? I am going to definitely check it out. I can’t use anything that is too resource intensive because I don’t have a PC. I was kind of going for a darker scene. I wish I could figure out how to get that more “filmic” look. Some things just look a bit too sharp to me and take away from the mystery. It does remind me a little bit of the game BioShock for some reason. Again, thank you very much for your comment! It is greatly appreciated! I have a LOT to learn. Nomad Sculpt is the closest I have come to using this kind of software.

I unfortunately had this problem too with my laptop, it was good at its time but couldn’t handle more complicated scenes. It was really strong but not smooth… I was shocked when I saw that my new PC is not that much faster than that laptop in terms of CPU rendering, so maybe you can try CPU rendering too. My laptop was weaker on GPU side. Maybe if you can tell your laptop specs that would be helpful.

Yeah Octane is free, it also supports LUT’s so that you can achieve that filmic look using LUT’s. If you wanted to use Cycles, the curves in the color management or the compositor are very good for color manipulation, also this metal materials pack Pro Metals is very good for creating such sci-fi scenes:

It was 5$ when I bought it, but it’s just 1$ now. Do you like to make a sharp light source on the right side to light up the center and left side of the scene? It can break the symmetrical scenes very well by making a visual contrast. BioShock was really a masterpiece, yeah it reminds me of past… Sadly I haven’t used Nomad Sculpt, sculpting was out of my focus area.
