alot of noise in HDRI render with yafray

i just started playin around w/ HDRI in yafray…can someone tell me how to aviod the really rough looking noise??? if that makes any sense…

hi,

if you haven’t already done it, you could try the updated version of yafray from here. You will need the updated export script in the same thread, and then use the pathlight with the cached setting switched on…

that gave me some good results (and it’s much much faster!). The script doesn’t work with 2.28 as far as I can tell though.

I have the same problem
no matter how high my sample count is, no matter how many antialias passes I use, it still stays grainy. I couldn’t get decent pictures with cached pathlight neither, it just replaces the grain with, hm, light patches.

Not cached pathlight, 512 samples, 4aaminpases, 4 aapasses, about 12 hours of rendertime on 2000+ xp, 1G ram

same settings, except cached pathlight, 0.002 cache size, I don’t know the rendertime, well under an hour. Oh yeah, the surface under the sword is NOT reflective at all.

hi,

i had really variable results with hdri, it seemed to depend on the hdri I used at lot.

Just out of interest, have you tried dropping the samples down to 16? I had fine results with 16 samples, maybe 512 samples is causing the problem here.

Here is a thread I posted at the YAFray forum site on how to set up your HDRI lighting within YableX.

For my settings, I usually set the Hemi Light samples to 10-12. AA Passes to 4 and Mini-AA passes to 4. I get good results with this set up. Also, I have found that the quality of the HDRI file comes into play here as well. I use the uffizi_probe pretty much all the time and get very little grain at all. I have used other probes, but they result in a lot grainier, (is that a word? :stuck_out_tongue: ), renders.

Hope that helps.

hi

here’s a test I did using the “rnl” lightprobe, the shadow size was half the default, the cache size a bit bigger than default. It was 16 samples cached pathlight, and 3 antialias passes. I dropped the “exposure” setting to -1 or -2 I think. My apologies I can’t remember the settings a bit more exactly!!!

erufailon - if you’re still having problems, I was doing a bit more experimenting last night.

Seems that cached pathlight with the cache at default (0.008), shadow size way way down at 0.004, and about 100 samples (i.e. controller at 10) were giving me really nice results in terms of getting rid of the blotchy patches of light.

I don’t have any web space: just a photo site which is limited to 640x480. But I was thinking of a little test sheet showing the effect of shadow size, samples and cache size on hdri renders. If anyones interested, has space and wants to do a little web page for it, let me know and I’ll start putting together the pics.
